Oracle Beats Street, Closes In on Sun
On Sunday, Accenture became the first sponsor to officially sever ties with Woods, explaining that “[Tiger] is no longer the right representative” for its advertising. (Check out the Tiger Woods Stock Index for other past and present sponsors.) By Monday afternoon, Accenture had swept its New York office clean of all Woods posters, in what appeared to be an attempt to wipe him from its corporate memory.
Also over the weekend, Procter & Gamble’s(PG Quote) Gillette division said it would begin limiting Woods’ role in its marketing programs, while AT&T and Tag Heuer also said they were assessing their ties with the world’s number one golfer. Meanwhile, Tag Heuer’s vice-president of communications, Francoise Bezzolam, recently fueled speculation of a breakup, saying “we are not announcing that we will keep Tiger and we are not announcing we will drop Tiger Woods. We are still considering it and we haven’t taken a decision yet.” Gatorade says it’s been in talks with Woods’ agents, without specifying the nature of those talks.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said on Wednesday that he looks forward to Woods’ return to professional golf when the time is right, but doesn’t think his absence will result in a big financial loss for the PGA.
